Mythological Still Lifes

Objects are what’s left behind when the humans are gone.In archeology, entire cultures are reconstructed from found objects. In many ways, objects are the perfect stand in for humans and their experiences. They are what we surround ourselves with, what we interact with and use every day, and the things that remain when we do not.

I have always had an interest in stories, and narratives are a driving force behind my work. While I am primarily a printmaker, I also consider myself a storyteller, moving across boundaries of media as needed. Greek mythology is something I’ve been fascinated with for nearly as long as I can remember, especially with how they are so easily told and retold across art and written forms.

These works are my contribution to that tradition, as I retell Greek myths through the lens of a still life. How does a story get distilled into an arrangement of objects? Some of the works have overt references to the myths, such as the bowl of Pomegranates in Hades & Persephone, or the spider in Athena. Others are a more subtle association, like the fire poppies in Hestia, or only one of the candles in Orpheus & Eurydice reaching the mirror, a reference to Orpheus looking back before Eurydice could make it safely out of hell.
